At this hour advocates for same sex marriage are making their case to a federal judge in Eugene, Ore.

Four couples are suing the state in an effort to overturn a voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage.

U. S. district judge Michael McShane will hear arguments from attorneys for the plaintiffs but isn't expected to issue a ruling today. That's because opponents filed a last-minute motion to intervene in the case.

Outside the courthouse in Eugene, supporters gathered before the hearing. Some described the day as an historic occasion in their fight for legal recognition of same-sex marriage in the state.
