Killer Of Spokane Pizza Deliveryman Won't Go Free

Washington DOC
Daniel Paul Delgado was convicted in the 1992 shotgun slaying of a Domino's pizza delivery driver in Spokane.

A man sentenced to decades in prison for the shotgun slaying of a Spokane pizza delivery driver won’t go free -- at least for now.

On a July night in 1992, Daniel Paul Delgado and his accomplices ordered a Domino’s pizza and then lay in wait. When delivery driver Michael Maykowskyj stepped from his car, Delgado opened fire with a shotgun killing the young father and law student.

Because Delgado was 17 at the time of the crime, a new Washington law makes him eligible for early release after 20 years behind bars. But the state’s Indeterminate Sentencing Board announced Monday that he’s “not releasable” yet.

The Board concluded Delgado is on a path to change his life and attitude, but he’s still considered by prison staff to be a member of a gang. Delgado can petition for release again next June.

A lawyer for the family of his victim said they are relieved for now, but the fact Delgado can try again next year “simply prolongs their trauma.”
