Former Washington Democratic Operative Pleads Guilty To Theft

A former Democratic operative in Washington has admitted to embezzling campaign money. Michael Walter King pleaded guilty Thursday in King County Superior Court.

King is the former executive director of the campaign committee for Washington state Senate Democrats. The 32-year old entered a plea of guilty to eight counts of theft.

King was accused of embezzling $250,000 to feed a gambling and alcohol problem. Washington Senate Democrats have said the misspent campaign funds may have cost them a close race in southwest Washington last November.

The Senate Democratic caucus has since opened a new campaign committee and the co-chairs say new financial oversights are in place. King is scheduled to be sentenced next month.

The prosecutor’s office says he faces up to 29 months in prison
